Music to watch properties by... myspace recommendation's

Postby Beerhunter on Wed Jan 30, 2008 10:34 pm

During the past few weeks, being tied to a computer developing this toolbar, I've become hooked on myspace.

There's lots of good unsigned or lesser know bands out there, here's a few I like...

  • Ruarri Joseph - easy listening, upbeat, sing along stuff - ideal for when something goes right.
  • The Dub Pistols - I really like my ska, and this is an interesting mix of live band and dj.
  • Peatbog Faeries - Another band combining styles, this time from Isle of Skye - classically celtic with a modern twist.

Anyone got some recommendations of myspace bands to listen to?

You want to use Last.FM - it's groovylilcious!

Here's mine: http://www.last.fm/user/gdoutch

Or pop in your favourite band's name, click play, and leave it while it constantly plays tunes you like.

Thats good... First track (If I try) started off a bit Primus/Rage Against The Machine

I'm listening to a lot of Within Temptation at the moment.. fanstastic live too :D

I seem to have this thing about female singers at the moment, like Nouvelle Vague... only the French could do such stylish covers  (should add.. have a listen to http://www.nouvellesvagues.com/english/music.html as well as myspace)

Cheers

Just been listening to "Within Temptation" and think they are a good band: as a critical musician I think;

"What Have You Done Now" has a good tune behind it but is a little lyrically challenging (too main stream)
"Frozen" sounds like it has very strong Evenescence/Madona/Avril Lavigne influence but still not a bad tune (easy listening)
"Stand My Ground" sounds like it could have been on Metalica's S&M album
"All I Need" is an interesting acoustic choice for a 'gothic/rock' band... sounds quite 'ballady' (westlife versus queen?)
"Angels" reminds me of a lighter female version of the rasmus

On the whole of very good and interesting mix of influences and styles that puts a very different edge on the genre

I see what you mean about "Nouvelle Vague" it's got 'Gay Paris' written all over it... nice easy listening, I also like the jazz/moetown thing they have going for them... can see why you like them

Thinking about it, I think one of the things I really like about Within Temptation is that is quite "orchestral", in the same way I find early Metalica tracks... there's a hidden counter melody which you hear in your mind.

I see what you mean about "Nouvelle Vague" it's got 'Gay Paris' written all over it... nice easy listening, I also like the jazz/moetown thing they have going for them... can see why you like them

Or it could just be the sexy french female voice ;) Hopefully they don't clash with anything else I want to see at Beautiful Days.

Another very interesting band.. 12 Stone Toddler.. very much a Mike Patton/Mr Bungle influence... and some of the tracks could be from the lighter end of California.

One of the most underrated and unluckiest bands... Rialto.

To me a touch of the Beatles and in their later stuff New Order.

Haven't got that one yet... but will do, as I'm off to Beautiful Days where he's playing in August... along with The Pogues, Levellers, Hawkwind, The Saw Doctors , Gong, Lamb, Dreadzone, Imagined Village, Dub Pistols, Pendulum DJ’s, Cara Dillon, The King Blues, Eliza Carthy, Imelda May, Lau, Edward II, Kris Drever, John McCusker & Roddy Woomble Trio, John Smith, Sonic Boom Six, Les Truttes, Chris T-T, Jay Jay Pistolet, plus more TBA

If anyone else is going, I'm sure you'll find me in the bar with a pint of "suicider" ;)

Something quite different and has a *lot* of influences.. the band is Leprous, the album Tall Poppy Syndrome (http://open.spotify.com/search/Leprous)

For those without spotify... a youtube track

Don't be put of with the heavy riffs.... the albums quite prog rock as well  and very delicate in places too.
